Necromancy is not a well liked field of magic. Yet as most see the empire of Al‘Anfa as a kind of evil empire, the methods Brabak uses to survive against a superior enemy include pitting the black mages of the academy in Brabak against Al‘Anfa.
And Brabak is the foremost academy to teach Necromancy.
Quite a few black mages have the ability to raise a skeleton for a few turns of combat, mages of Brabak perfected the art to animate the dead (this ritual (Animate Dead*) is not yet published in English, but basically extends the undead-time of undead from combat turns to weeks and months or even years)
In most civilized realms this art is banned, so a lot of Necromancers where hunted and found refuge in Borbarads armies. While Brabak considers themselves as civilised, to them those mages that stayed are a useful resource, like Vitus.
Half Elves are normally only occurring in or close to regions inhabited by Elves, however, debouchery and decadence with exotic fantasies and fueled by excessive drug use and slavery created a sizeable population of Half Elves in Al‘Anfa.
Vitus was born there to an addicted mother and resented the rotten morals of the higher classes in Al‘Anfa. Eventually as a young boy he managed to escape and reach Brabak where his innate magical talent enabled him to quickly master Necromancy.
(He can human sized Animate Dead* in a 4 hour ritual for up to QL years at a cost of 16 Astralpoints of which two are permanently bound. The AP sum reflect he has done so enough times to have 5 undead available and bought back the points. Also he has an undead Raven with him to mock the faith in Boron, that is prevalent in Al‘Anfa)
Vitus sees himself as a righteous fighter against the evil Grandes of Al‘Anfa, though he could easily glide into a villain role.
